Monuments
Kristina Kvalvik. 2016 (3:30)
(Henrik Lund Jørgensen video archive)

Monuments presents beachside bunkers from the Second World War as memorials of an era gone by. On white sand against the blue horizon, these monumental, grey blocks of concrete stand there as remembrances of a past age.

Filmed by Henrik Lund Jørgensen, the footage shows images of old bunkers standing by the North Sea and near various train stations. I wanted to explore the contrast between nature and urbanity. I used the heavy, industrial sound of trains as a contrast to the images of the sea in order to suggest a feeling of being submerged and to reinforce the sentimentality of the images.
